Biografia
Francisco Maranhense Freire de Lemos foi professor de português (primeiras letras), advogado e músico de relevante atuação em várias cidades do interior do Maranhão. Residiu em Itapecuru-Mirim, onde atuou como trompetista em uma banda da cidade, Pinheiro e Alcântara, tornando-se regente da banda deste último município. Há fortes indícios de que tenha sido professor de música de Honorio Joaquim Ribeiro (ca.1865-1912). Seu irmão, Clemente Maranhense Freire de Lemos, estabeleceu residência em Guimarães, onde criou uma banda de música marcial.

Biografia
Francisco Libânio Colás era filho do clarinetista português Francisco Antônio Colás (ca.1808-1971), que chegou a São Luís na década de 1820. Nascido nessa capital por volta de 1831, foi o primeiro músico nascido no Maranhão a ter uma carreira nacional. Estudou música em casa com seu pai, e com apenas 15 anos já tocava violino, seu principal instrumento, e trompete em grupos musicais da cidade. Foi um prolífico compositor de música sacra e peças cômicas, além de empresário musical. Dirigiu temporadas no Teatro São Luiz, Teatro da Paz em Belém, Teatro São João em Salvador e Teatro Santa Isabel do Recife, cidade para onde se mudou em 1865. Atuou em eventos religiosos, deixando várias obras desse cunho. Faleceu no Recife, em 1885. Foi um dos precursores do nacionalismo “folclorista” no Brasil.
