Biografia
Elpídio Pereira nasceu em Caxias no ano de 1872. Iniciou seus estudos de violino em sua cidade natal. Na época, compôs pequenas peças, preservadas no álbum que está hoje no Museu dos Teatros do Rio de Janeiro. Foi estudar em Paris por três vezes. Entre 1890 a 1892, com apoio de seu pai, e de 1898 a 1903, com subsídios do governo do Amazonas, estudou com Domenico Ferroni. Entre 1913 e 1916, com bolsa do governo Federal, foi estudar com Paul Vidal. Foi residir em definitivo no Rio de Janeiro em 1904. Em seus retornos ao Brasil, organizou concertos com suas obras em Manaus, Belém, São Luís, Caxias, Teresina, Recife e Rio de Janeiro. Em 1916, seu bailado “Les Pommes du Voisin” foi interpretado por 76 vezes no Theátre de la Gaité Lyrique, em Paris, sendo sua obra de maior repercussão. Como sempre passou por dificuldades financeiras, solicitou trabalho no Consulado Geral do Brasil em Paris, assumindo esse cargo em 1921. A partir de então, nunca mais compôs, mas manteve-se ativo na vida musical, tornando-se próximo da pianista Magdalena Tagliaferro (1893-1986). Em 1930, foi reconduzido para o Consulado de Londres. Dez anos depois, aposentou-se, indo residir em Mendes, no Rio de Janeiro. Faleceu em 1961.

Biografia
Filho de Pedro Joaquim Maria e Amélia Silvana de Araújo, casal que teve ao todo nove filhos. Seu nome de batismo era Ernesto Joaquim Maria, mas gostava de assinar Ernesto dos Santos. O pai era pedreiro construtor, e tocava bombardino nas horas vagas. A mãe, a famosa Tia Amélia do grupo das baianas do grupo da Cidade Nova, gostava de cantar modinhas e promovia inúmeras festas e grandes reuniões de samba. Seu primeiro instrumento foi o cavaquinho, que começou a aprender aos 14 anos de idade, ouvindo as músicas de Mário Cavaquinho, de quem era grande admirador. Pouco depois passou a tocar violão. Em 1932, casou-se com a cantora Zaíra de Oliveira, com quem viveu até a morte desta, ocorrida em 1952. Tiveram uma filha, Lígia dos Santos, pesquisadora e personalidade influente na vida musical carioca. Em 1953, casou-se novamente, com Maria, que, no ano 2001, lançou-se como cantora, já aos 90 anos de idade, chegando a gravar um CD, editado pelo ICCA em 2003.
